128th Street Project

Swift Green Line construction is underway!

This new bus rapid transit line from Community Transit will provide fast, frequent service between Canyon Park/Bothell and Boeing/Paine Field in early 2019.

Construction Update

As of Tuesday, August 1 the southernmost eastbound lane of 128th St between 4th St. and I-5 will be closed from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Construction crews are working on the first phases of the 128th widening project. Expect intermittent delays during the lane closures.

The closures will be in effect for the next several weeks.

The road-widening project will create new right-hand lanes on 128th Street at the approach to I-5, one on each side of the freeway in South Everett. These lanes will save buses 3-7 minutes, while also providing a benefit to general purpose traffic.

128th Street Widening

To help speed buses along the Swift Green Line, new right-hand lanes are being created on 128th Street approaching I-5 in south Everett. There will be one new lane on each side of the freeway.

On the eastside of the freeway, heading west, the new right lane will be for buses and all traffic turning right onto northbound I-5. The right lane will have a queue-jump signal. When a bus is present, the signal gives the right-lane a green light a few seconds before the through lanes to allow the bus to get across the overpass.

On the westside of the freeway, heading east, the new right lane will be for all traffic turning right onto southbound I-5. The next lane in will be a bus-only lane. There will be two through lanes for all traffic. Here, the bus-only lane will have a queue-jump signal.

Currently, it can take buses anywhere from 3 to 17 minutes to cross this busy overpass. That makes it hard for buses to stay on schedule. This project will help buses stay on schedule, and will also benefit all traffic traveling across the overpass or entering I-5 from 128th Street.

Construction timeline

Construction on this project starts this June. During the day, work is limited to the curb or street shoulder. Traffic may be impacted by temporary lane closures between 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. weeknights and on weekends. There will not be any lane closures on Friday or Saturday nights.

This 128th Street project could take two summer construction seasons to complete, or it may be done by the end of this year. The final timeline depends on how much of the road work can be completed before October.
